What are the symptoms of the Corona virus (COVID - 19)?

For most people, the Corona virus (COVID-19) produces mild symptoms which include:

• a cough
• high temperature (fever)
• shortness of breath

As of 18 May 2020, new information about the Corona virus (COVID-19) symptoms have been announced.
Self-isolate if you have any of the following:

  • A new continuous cough
  • fever
  • And, as of 18 May 2020, loss or change in your sense of smell (anosmia).

Stay at home if you have symptoms (self-isolation*)

  • Anyone with symptoms should self-isolate for 7 days from when their symptoms started.

What should I do if someone in my home develops symptoms?

You should self-isolate for 14 days from when the person in your house first developed the symptoms.

Testing for the Corona virus

31st May 2020 - The NHS test and trace service was launched. 

Anyone who has symptoms of the Corona virus (COVID 19), can now ask for a test to check whether they have the virus.

Who can be tested?

*What does self isolation mean?

Self-isolating means staying at home and not leaving it, other than for exercise. Don't go to work, school or public areas during this time.

People are advised to self isolate for the following reasons:

1 - If they or members of their household have, or are showing signs of the Corona virus. For more information - click here                                                 

2 - If they are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

What does social distancing mean?

Social distancing measures are steps you can take to reduce social interaction between people. This will help reduce the transmission of Corona virus (COVID-19).

What does contact tracing mean?

Protecting the public from infectious disease through “contact tracing”.
Public Health England will identify all close contacts of anyone who tested positive and give further advice.
